The Twitter redesign, and what does it mean for the marketeer

The Twitter redesign, it is coming. It is currently being tested by a small group of people and one of the major changes, will be its all too familiar vertical column design that will dissapear. The new layout will have a (sort of) Facebook Timeline layout, with an enlarged cover photo across the entire top of the page and the profile picture moved to the left (see screen below).

The power of the “old”  lies in its minimalist style and, user friendly layout, but new users considering signing up (in order to follow a celebrity, for example), quick access to big photos and profile pictures might play a large role. Somthing which is more in style with Pinterest and Instagram.

People have become more and more visual, hence the power of platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest. Only recently Twitter added the option for in-stream photo’s, which prooved for better engagement of the posts.  The latter will have a major change on how markerteers can and will use Twitter. The risk of not adapting is no guarantee,  that yours and theirs,  current strategy will continue to work. Like the changes to Facebook and Google+ marketeers have just to sit back, see what will happen to the new layout and adjust accordingly. Adapt to the new “enivroment” as it were, and if need be execute a new plan.

What the actual new layout will look like is still not clear, nor which new features will be added, if they have them, but one thing is for sure,  the new Twitter is coming!

Below is another screen of the “new” layout could look like.  What you can see clear is the your “lists” will be featured much better, instead of being “hidden” in your account. Better acces to Tweets you favored, and it looks like there will be room for ads on the right side of the screen, just like Facebook has. Wheter this will be an improvement is yet to been seen, if they decide to use that space in that way. I for one like the “tranquillity” of no ads, besides the occasional one in-stream.

Marketers Guide to Pinterest

Pinterest, by now you should have heard of it. Why? People are visual, thet like seeing picture of great stuff and photo’s. I mean, when your frineds get back from a vacation, what is the first thing you when you meet after, you sit down at the diner table with a coffee, beer or galss of wine and go through the holiday pictures and tell the stories that go with it.

Now a days with all the different socail media platforms, you see those same photo’s when your friends are still on vacation. To show what a great time you have. The comment on it, wishing you a great time or telling you that they wish they were there too!

Beside Facebook and Instagram, Pinterest is a great platfrom to use for these kinds of pictures, but it can also be used as a “mood”board for thing you like or to be used for inspiraton. More and more peolpe use it and for markerteers os still uncharted teritory. SO here are some facts and figures on Pinterest followed by an Infographic.

Who is using Pinterest? Well according to the latest figure it is mostly women.

Females 25-34 – 27%
Females 35-44 – 29%
Females 45-54 – 24%

But more and more men are discovering it too!

Is Pinterest engaging, let me rephrase that. How engaging is Pinterest?  Facebook is the still the most engaging site on the planet at 405 minutes per month, followed by  Pinterest and Tumblr are equal in second place at 89 minutes. Funny, for I always thought that Twitter was second but it  comes in third at 21 minutes. Next is LinkedIn with 17 minutes, and surprise surprise Google Plus – 3 minutes but growing still at a fast rate. Also Instargram is missing. Wich had a rapid growth over the last few years, same as Vine.

The International Social Media Landscape 2013 [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social Media, we all use it one way or another, to check up on your friends, family, your Twitter or to get inspired by things you see on Pinterest. It has become part of our lives, whether you like it or not.  You meet meet people you would never have “met” if not for Social Media, simply because it has no borders and the amount amount of users is growing every day.

For you as a company, this also means borders are “removed”, so instead of think local or national you can focus globaly ( if you wish to do so). Of course there are few things to consider: like laungage barriers, or cultural differences but  these are things which for the biggest part can be overcome if you keep them in mind.  To sum this up  here’s a great infographic on the International Social Media Landscape in 2013.
