Marketers Guide to Pinterest

Pinterest, by now you should have heard of it. Why? People are visual, thet like seeing picture of great stuff and photo’s. I mean, when your frineds get back from a vacation, what is the first thing you when you meet after, you sit down at the diner table with a coffee, beer or galss of wine and go through the holiday pictures and tell the stories that go with it.

Now a days with all the different socail media platforms, you see those same photo’s when your friends are still on vacation. To show what a great time you have. The comment on it, wishing you a great time or telling you that they wish they were there too!

Beside Facebook and Instagram, Pinterest is a great platfrom to use for these kinds of pictures, but it can also be used as a “mood”board for thing you like or to be used for inspiraton. More and more peolpe use it and for markerteers os still uncharted teritory. SO here are some facts and figures on Pinterest followed by an Infographic.

Who is using Pinterest? Well according to the latest figure it is mostly women.

Females 25-34 – 27%
Females 35-44 – 29%
Females 45-54 – 24%

But more and more men are discovering it too!

Is Pinterest engaging, let me rephrase that. How engaging is Pinterest?  Facebook is the still the most engaging site on the planet at 405 minutes per month, followed by  Pinterest and Tumblr are equal in second place at 89 minutes. Funny, for I always thought that Twitter was second but it  comes in third at 21 minutes. Next is LinkedIn with 17 minutes, and surprise surprise Google Plus – 3 minutes but growing still at a fast rate. Also Instargram is missing. Wich had a rapid growth over the last few years, same as Vine.

Google vs Facebook Facts and Figures [infographic]

The fight between Google and Facebook is always nice to write about, but now it is even nicer with these facts and figures. Even though Facebook is still the lagest social media platform, it is loosing some terrain to new comers such Google +, Vine (owned by Twitter), Snapchat, Kik and Instagram. Mostly the younger kids flock to Instagram (owned by Facebook), for it is more hard for their parents to check up on it what they do.

Facebook has lost some of its cool, the averge user is 38 years old, compare that to Google + were the average age is 28. But than again it has less users (500 million June 2013 Source Wikipedia), who are more active than Facebook users. Which I find interesting seeing as Facebook has  1.15 billion (active March 2013: Source Wikipedia), so this Infographic somewhat outdated user wise and something important is being left out,  Mobile! and this is were Facebook has it most activity! On average  819 million mobile users per month, and the percentage that logs on every day is 79%.

Even though the teens, leave Facebook behind them Google + isn’t  proffeting from it, and Google still has no answer to Instagram or Vine. Still this infographic sums up the difference between the both quit nicely.

The International Social Media Landscape 2013 [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social Media, we all use it one way or another, to check up on your friends, family, your Twitter or to get inspired by things you see on Pinterest. It has become part of our lives, whether you like it or not.  You meet meet people you would never have “met” if not for Social Media, simply because it has no borders and the amount amount of users is growing every day.

For you as a company, this also means borders are “removed”, so instead of think local or national you can focus globaly ( if you wish to do so). Of course there are few things to consider: like laungage barriers, or cultural differences but  these are things which for the biggest part can be overcome if you keep them in mind.  To sum this up  here’s a great infographic on the International Social Media Landscape in 2013.

Do companies need to evolve to keep up in the digital era?

Evolution, it is always present. When we think of evolution, we think how nature adapts to it’s enviroment. It (hardly) ever crosses our mind that companies should evolve too! what do I mean by  this? Well, actually, it is simple.

We live in an age where, by now, the internet, social media, smartphones and tablet are such a big part of our lives, that we cannot be without it. They are a such a big part of our daily life, for most of the things we do we always chDeck our iPhones (or Android device). E.g. what is the first thing you do when you wake up or tha last thing you do when you go top sleep? Right, most of you would answer: “checking Facebook, Twitter,Instagram” etc. It has almost become second nature, and these are just a few examples of how we use our “phone”. We also use to look up products online, compare one shop to another and if the online store doesn’t load fast enough or doesn’t look trust worthy or our “friends” have bad things to say about it, we don’d even take the time to look. All these things influence us in our decisions on what to “like”, who to “follow” or where to buy online.

And this is where companies and their digital evolution come in, or as Brian Solis likes to call it, “Digital Darwinism”. What is Digital Darwinism? It is “the evolution of consumer behavior when society and technology evolve faster than the ability to exploit it”. ( source Brian Solis: The End of business as Usual). This is what is happening at the moment to loads of businesses all over the world. They can’t keep up or “think we lasted a long time before the internet and social media, our customer will keep coming“. Yes this could be true, but in general they will eventually will have to make use of other chanels besides the local newspaper in which they have a recurring ad. If the do not, then it is most likely that such business will eventually won’t last. Companies like Blockbuster thought this way, and they were a large company, and didn’t make it. They were surpassed by companies who offered the same films via Video On Demand (VOD), iTunes and pirate sites.

In the Netherlands Netflix will soon be available, this means that the big networks in the Netherlands, who offer movies or series through VOD, have to change their strategy. Why pay more on their sites, when you can pay €8,00 euro’s per month and get al you can watch. Easy answer I would say. It not a question of should they evlove, but they to  evolve to keep up ( in this ever becoming faster world).

These are just  some examples of how companies should keep up in the digital era. To evlove or not. To make use of all the tools which are are there, or to keep going about your busines as always is being done. There is choice, but which to make is up the companies facing that decision. These are things a marketeer should think about when they get their budget, for you can only spend that euro/dollar once.

The Big 10 On Facebook

In a recent article on Mashable the big 10 of Facebook were named, the outcome: Coca Cola is the most engaged Brand on Facebook. But can a band or musician not be a brand? Lady Gaga’s page has more engament than Coca Cola ( “1,138,296 talking about this”) So if she were a brand Lady Gaga wil the most engaged brand as a matter of fact, if Coca Cola is the top brand on Facebook, than she is the biggest person/brand on Facebook.
